An integral part of the research the equipment will support is in the determination of three- dimensional structures of membrane proteins involved in electrochemical signal transduction as well as their catalytic function. Determining such structures generally requires empirical screening of multiple species, subtypes, and modifications to the protein sequence, followed by preparation of the best-behaved constructs to high purity and concentration. From a technical viewpoint, there is limited lab space available for the instrument, and a solution with a compact and space efficient footprint is required.
